3rd Annual Jordyn Keeley Memorial Art and Writing Competition

Theme: Everyone has a story; here is mine.

The Jordyn Keeley Memorial Art and Writing Competition is in honor of Jordyn Keeley, who died by suicide at age 14 in 2016. Jordyn was loved by many and her death was extremely difficult for our entire community. Not only was her death a tragedy, but it highlighted the history of silence surrounding mental health and suicide. When people feel they can’t talk about their mental health, they are reluctant to reach out for help. By drawing attention to the idea that we all face challenges and need to develop skills to overcome them, we believe that feelings of empowerment are communicated. Although mental illness is not something that impacts everyone, mental wellness is something that we all have and need to work to maintain.

Jordyn was a vibrant and fun-loving teenager who was loved by many people. She was sassy, adventurous, kind-hearted and intelligent. We felt that the best way to keep her memory alive was to honor her through one of her favorite activities, art. Jordyn would draw on anything she could get her hands on, whether it was a canvas, a binder or even her own skin. For her, art was often an outlet for problems she faced in her life.
